ASA 101, Keelboat Sailing 1 

Capable of skippering a sloop-rigged keelboat around 20 to 27 feet long during daylight in light to moderate winds (up to 15 knots) and sea conditions. Understands basic sailing terms, parts, and functions, helm commands, essential sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship, and safety, including basic navigation rules to prevent collisions and avoid hazards. Operation of auxiliary power is not required.

This course will cover

Key Components of ASA 101:

  • Basic Sailing Skills: Learn to sail a boat of about 20 to 27 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions.
     

  • Terminology: Understand sailing terms and the basic parts of a sailboat, including sails, rigging, and hardware.
     

  • Sail Handling: Practice hoisting, trimming, and dousing sails, along with tacking and jibing.
     

  • Safety: Focus on safety practices, including man-overboard recovery techniques and understanding the rules of the road.
     

  • Knots: Learn essential knots, including the bowline, clove hitch, and figure-eight knot.
     

  • Points of Sail: Understand how to sail at different angles to the wind and how to adjust sails accordingly.
     

  • Basic Navigation: Introduction to basic navigation skills, such as reading charts and using a compass.

     

After completing the ASA 101 course, students receive certification that qualifies them to skipper a small keelboat in familiar waters during daylight hours in light to moderate conditions. It’s the first step toward more advanced sailing certifications.
